Famous Last Words: I can be a creative writer?!

This class has been surprising in so many wonderful ways, but I think the best of all for me as I reflect on the stories I've written in this and past weeks is that I discovered I can write creatively. I took writing classes throughout high school, but only a Business Writing class in college. I definitely more readily enjoy more analytical writing, but I think that's only because I haven't had very many creative writing outlets. With Laura's encouragement, I was somehow able to relate Wonder Woman, a modern superhero (and quite frankly a most deserving icon) to ancient Indian folklore. And it was fun! And I was kinda good at it! No one was more surprised than I was.

I had major writer's block at the beginning of the semester, but reading so many creative, interpretive stories by our classmates showed me that you can really do whatever you want with creative writing and it turns into something fun to read once you start having fun writing it. Choosing to write about Wonder Woman made it fun for me, and more of a challenge to figure out ways to relate her to the old tales, but so worth it in the end because I was able to show myself that I can do creative writing.

Knowing that, I can enter my future career even more confidently, so I'm glad that I pushed myself to think outside the box with these stories throughout the semester. I plan to keep trying to write little short stories like that, because I think it's a good way to keep your creativity sharp and fresh. Maybe I can write little adventure stories for my siblings. My little brother is ~super~ into Minecraft, and I think it would be fun to write stories about the adventures he goes on in there, and all of the cool things he creates.

This is a Minecraft background I put on my laptop to surprise my little brother, and he was beyond excited.

  1. Hi Alena,

I came to a similar realization this semester as well. I may not ever be as good as I want to be, but I spent so many years, through high school and college, thinking that I was a terrible creative writer and at the beginning of this class I was terrified! But I feel proud of the work I have done here and am really glad that I went outside of my comfort zone.

Introduction to a Nonprofit Enthusiast

I am studying Nonprofit Administration, and graduating in May. I come from St. Louis, MO, where I've spent just over half of my life. I have two siblings, a 9 year-old brother and a 2 year-old sister, both the best little humans to grace this earth. I've enjoyed my time at OU, during which I spent a semester at Kyungpook National University in Daegu, South Korea. During my time there, I was able to hike many of the mountains surrounding Daegu, visit some gorgeous temples and sites of historical significance, and also hop over to Japan for a little less than a week. I've also been to Frankfurt, Heidelberg, and surrounding towns in Germany. I love both places.     My most recent international travel took me to Monterrey, Mexico, with my fiancĂ© and his mother. He was born there, and still has a large part of his family living there. It was lovely to meet them, and they were kind enough to take me all over the city, visiting museums and parks, and eating lots of amazing foo...

Week 2 Story: Mrs. Crocodile Needs to Vent

Mr. and Mrs. Crocodile Please Note: The current version of this story is on my portfolio site.  Mrs. Crocodile is sitting in her weekly women's group meeting, eating some of the river eel and algae rolls her best friend, Mrs. Piranha, always set out. They had so much to catch up on... Mrs. Crocodile was getting bigger every day with the little babies growing, and her husband had been up to more of his usual antics. She loved Mr. Crocodile, but sometimes she wondered how he managed before she came along. "Hello, honey," said Mrs. Piranha. "How are you today? Those little guys giving you a hard time?" "No, not bad. I'm just enjoying getting to eat all these delicious rolls... you know they're my favorite. All of these cravings have been so strange. Just the other day I had the most intense one for monkey's heart." "Monkey's heart?! Those pests are impossible to catch, but oh so delicious if you can manage to snag a bite....
